Moving... went.

* Josh hired movers for his stuff, and went to work.  I stayed behind to manage the movingness.  It went fairly well.

X: They asked me once if I wanted them to take some of the smaller stuff, since it wasn't in a box.  I just told them: "Take everything you think I" (specifically) "couldn't put in a car.  If yall want to take more stuff, I'm not gonna stop you, but you're here for the large and heavy stuff, so."
J: That is exactly right!

It seemed obvious to me...

* On the one hand, Josh and I had a fairly clear idea of where boxes &c should go, and the movers just kind of put things more or less wherever, so I was worried that Josh would be upset with me for things not being in the right places.  On the other hand, fuck 'im; I took the day off work to get this done, he has an issue, he can move 'em his own self.  On the gripping hand, why on earth would he get upset with me at all?

My brain, I swear.

* One of the bright sides of only having a little bit of stuff: if I owned furniture, I would've been unpacked already.  *goes to target.com*

** (Among other sites, I mean.)

* Each room has its own thermostat!  Wild.  Definitely useful in the winter -- turn on the heat in the rooms that matter, drop them when going to bed, and shut the doors when possible, to keep heat in the rooms.

Another thing to natter about!

* I already have a shopping list for thiiings.  Like a toothbrush holder, and an over-the-shower-head rack thingie.  Mmmm stuff.

* Josh has a couple of rugs.  I don't particularly care for them in general, I don't want them overtop carpeting, and I like the carpet.

X: Um, actually... I kind of don't want the rugs out, if that's okay.
J: *slowly*  Okay.  I'll probably put one or two in my room--
X: Well, duh, it's your room.
J: Right.  :)  I just know you don't like them.
X: It's not quite that I don't like them... if your rug-preference is greater than my--  Okay, I just turned this into a card game in my head.
J: *cracks up*
X: If you have more points in rug-preference than I do in rug-dislike, then you win the round, but some day, I'll put more ranks in dislike, and then where will you be??
J: *laughs harder*

* Man, eff the haters, I like the carpet just fine.  (It's this chocolate-and-cream thing.  It matches the dark wood trim and cabinets.  I really like it.)

* Gah.  So.  I went back to the room I was renting, and I started moving things to the car.  I'd only had cereal that day, so I put some spaghetti on to boil.

Can you hear where this is going?

I currently have a hate-on for doors that latch when you close them.  Who thought this was a good idea?  Thankfully, a neighbour was there, and she called a locksmith.  They had to remove the lock, for heaven's sake.  $60 later, the pot was burnt, and I was in tears out of sheer hunger-/stress-fueled frustration.

Fanfuckingtacular, I tell you what.  Yet another pot to scrub.  &%(*$)@

* [livejournal.com profile] penghuin was a total dear, in lending me his car, offering it maybe on the weekend (work depending), and taking extra stuff upstairs when my knees decided to hate me, even though it made him late for work.  Total win.

* I am. so sore.  Oh god.

* As mentioned, Josh was at work when this whole movination thing went down.  So, he wanted to go to the bar to celebrate, but he called me first to see where I was at, how things were going, &c.

J: I put myself in your shoes, and figured that you'd be kind of put out if I just went straight to the bar, even though I didn't have anything to do.
X: OH yeah.  I mean, you didn't have anything to do, so going to the bar totally makes sense, but if you'd just gone straight to the bar without checking in, I probably would've tried to kill you with my mind.
J: *laughs*
X: "Why am I getting a nosebleed??"

Some days, he is v. v. smart indeed.  It wouldn't've been sensical to be upset with him, but dude -- stressed and hungry and overheated?  Fuck sense.

* I mean, for example, I found my bathrobe, towel, shower toiletries, brush, deodorant, pants, and other clothes in like 10 minutes, and I can't remember the last time I've bothered to label a box or pack boxes solely by room/content type/other.  Mwahaha.

* Oh eeee, I can finally get my desktop back!  And cell reception is good!

* Josh and I have had some good discussions about the part where he has all the things.  I don't want to harass him about having everything there is to have, but it truly baffles me.

One part is I have a strict cost/benefit analysis that values my laziness over owning things.  Owning things means I have a responsibility to them -- upkeep::cleaning, upkeep::repair, packing/moving, &c -- and gah, don' wanna.  So while I do own some things that are just aesthetic (a painting, a glass, a necklace, a cetera), they're generally small, or easily packed, or things like that.

And one part is... I'm myself now.  Why would I want to carry with me the objects of interest that former!X liked?  Why would I want the physical baggage of my former self around all the time?  I don't need to remember who I was so much that I need to keep everything I've ever acquired.  I'm me now, so I have things that pertain to me now.

Josh is rather nothing like this.  So, fun times.

* I don't like moving, it turns out.  But, I like the place, so okay.

In a fit of pique, I just packed nearly everything I own, with the exception of clothes and some books I don't yet have a box for.  I did this last night, and a bit this morning.

Owning not much stuff == win.

nonethefewer: "No... :( I wanted the opposite of this. :( " (things have gone awry)
When I get my paycheck this week, I'm going to take out the amount I have saved up and set it aside.  That way, I won't accidentally spendify it.  Alternately, I'll transfer it to bank::savings, to keep it away from bank::checking.

Gah, I only have stuff that fills a pre-furnished 10'x9' room, and it still feels like too much goddamn stuff.  On the other hand, I packed one bin (yarn, special-occasion clothes, books I've just read) and two teensy boxen-things, plus one bag for Goodwill/sale, plus three bags of trash/recycling, so go me!  I may be a little excited.  (I may carry the floor plans in my pocket.)

Oh gosh, when is trash day at the new place?  *beam*  Also, must print this page for putting on the side of the fridge.

I can never find food that is actually filling, for work.  This is unreasonably annoying.  I keep expecting to only have to eat once a day during the week and twice a day on weekends, and being all pissy when this naturally doesn't bear out.  "I just ate!  Waddayamean I gotta do it again?  I'm busy, and I just ate!"  Mneh.

Alas, I have a penchant for going through things immediately.  Hence why I can't have alcohol or snacks or things just hanging out in the house -- I will consume them all immediately.  "I'll just have a couple of Tootsie Rolls... *an hour later*  Why do I feel ill?"  This is why ING is win for me -- no chance of using it up Because It's There, because it really isn't.

I have a small stash of buttons, for [livejournal.com profile] bbbsg, for some reason.  I still have 242 lei, which is approximately 73 USD.  The banks around here just straight don't know what to do with it.  Would New York banks have a better time of this, do you think?  If so, maybe I'll just send it to [personal profile] rosefox, for paying my share of the phone bill this and next month.

...that's not a bad idea at all.

OH yes so I applied to jobs!  Woo!  One is exactly perfect, except for it's part-time at a start-up.  But, if it is sufficiently awesome... *shrugs*  I might put my ray-zoom into some direct-to-hire places, even though it's a pain, just to be thorough.

Also-things: shower curtain, flashlight and extra batteries, leave one of my unscented candles and some matches in the junk drawer.  What there needs to be is a bathroom junk drawer and also a my-stuff junk drawer.  I'm sure there are bins for this in the world.  And a proper laundry hamper!  I definitely want to get a desk soon, too.

I need, need, to budget hard for this month.  New-rent, deposit, prorated rent for current place, brain drugs, bus pass, phone bill, groceries.  Plus, I need to call two places and cancel my accounts.

On a scale of one to weird, how weird is it that I already know how Josh's and my fight about cleaning will go, and that it'll probably happen in the first quarter?  I worry that he'll see my not getting on his case about his place as my accepting his clutter-style, when really, it's about not getting on his case about his goddamn place, hello.  And I really don't want charts or schedules or anything, but I also don't want both of us getting lazy, or resentful...

I think too much.

I think I finally found a way to scan checks in and use Perl to more-or-less automatically resize them and also put them in the right folder.  Mwahahaha.

Except I'm nervous about testing it.  Alas.

When you go to a property management place to talk about one of their apartment conclaves, what's expected of me?  There's an application fee -- do I bring that?  I assume so, as I'll be applying.  If both Josh and I are applying, should he come with, if possible?

Today, I am apparently being an adult.

I started with apartment-shopping.  There's an apartment complex right down the street from me, so I went to their website and sent "Let's meet!" emails for three locations that they manage.

I looked up their applicant requirements, and noted that one was that the application may be rejected if, among other things, the applicant's outstanding bad debt (OBD) is over $2,500, or if they have more than 5 OBDs.

*anime sweatdrop*

So, I went to the website of a decent local credit union, to investigate their personal loans.  I heard advice from... someone... that one way to help out that whole credit score thing is to take out a bank loan, use that money to pay off (or help to pay off) a debt thing or three, then repay the loan on time.  Bam!  Improved credit.

One part on the application for that is entering my driver's license number.  My license expires on my birthday, which is one month minus one day from now.  Fantastic.  So now I'm reading up on getting my Oregon driver's license, which I should have done approximately a million years ago, give or take.  I'm hoping I won't need to do the driving test, given that my license right now is still valid.

Gah.  Being an adult is stupid.

I just put some more money in my ING account, for savings.  This'll go towards apartment-shopping.

One thing I love about moving: cleaning things out.  This weekend, I plan to pack a suitcase full of sweaters (not an exaggeration), borrow some movies from some local-type friends, and watch movies whilst processing more yarn for dismissal.

...I still need to mail things.  *facepalm*

I haven't acquired much in the way of new cruft (apart from being overeager about sweaters), so that's okay.

I think I'm supposed to be feeling more nervous about this whole thing than I am.  Mostly, my brain is telling me that we'll never find a place that's good, inexpensive, and nearby, unless we find it at the wrong time, which would mean doom.  I'm steadfastly ignoring it.

I'm looking through apartment listings.  Naturally, I made a spreadsheet in GDocs for this, that shows the address, distance in miles to downtown, distance in miles to our favourite bar (a number of friends go there, so it's good for comparison), the commute to Josh's work, the commute to mine, square footage, rent, deposit, notes about the apartment, and my notes.  There's a line item for Josh's current place, and one for [livejournal.com profile] trista/[livejournal.com profile] penghuin's place, for comparison.

Josh: One day, you're going to chart something, and it's going to make me shudder to find it.  I don't know what it is yet, but I know it'll happen.
