Welp.

My poor laptop is breaking all the way down.  I managed to thoroughly break the "s" key last night (I'm pasting the "s" when I need it; v. inefficient), and now the USB ports don't appear to be working.  I'm trying to use my nifty Logitech wireless keyboard, but it's not being recognised.  Damn.

Alas, unemployment stuff hasn't yet kicked in, else I'd acquire a cheap-ass laptop from somewhere.  I found some refurbished laptops for ~$200, which would get me by for job-shopping and basic survival... hm.

I lost my Shuffle ages ago, but never got around to caring about it.  Buuut, I'll be in New York next month, and an 8- to 10-hour flight == music is entirely required.  (Picking songs has been fun, because I get to categorise them while I'm there.)  Therefore, shopping.

Criteria:

* Basic music-playing functionality -- play, pause, skip, stop (or "the power button, durr"), volume.
* 4GB is ridiculous, 2GB is great, 1GB is doable.
* Ideally, it will charge via USB, because it will be a glorified thumb drive.  Failing that, please let it use a headphones jack to USB cable (spare Shuffle parts) or a mini-USB cable (spare phone parts).  I don't want to have to buy yet more shit.
* It should work with Linux.  I had, at the time, Ubuntu 9.10 and a third-gen Shuffle.  They did not love each other.  I do not want this again.

I basically want a glorified USB drive that works with Linux hello.  I cannot stress this enough -- I do have a laptop that runs Windows, but all of my music is on a hard drive in my desktop.  There are fifteen different convoluted ways of making this work, or of getting some Windows-focused device, and making that work... or I can get something that Works With Linux perhaps I have mentioned this.

(For example, this just straight-up immediately annoys me.)

And to whoever makes these things, please let it work with Rhythmbox.

--

Naturally, I started here.  Of these, iriver didn't annoy me, and fits the criteria above.  The Sansa Clip looks good, too, and is slightly cheaper, buuuttt.

Goddammit, I want one thing to work how I want it to work out of the goddamn box.  I want a music player that can connect to my music!!

I just found, somehow, this Thunderbird addon, that adds columns (and other functionality) to the address book.  JOY

In other news, there needs to be a sort of Rent-A-Shopper service.  Not for "shop for me!", though, more like "I am pure-D daft at buying bras, halp".  Or similar.  $n/hour for exterior decoration expertise.  I'd totally pay for this service.

When I get my paycheck this week, I'm going to take out the amount I have saved up and set it aside.  That way, I won't accidentally spendify it.  Alternately, I'll transfer it to bank::savings, to keep it away from bank::checking.

Gah, I only have stuff that fills a pre-furnished 10'x9' room, and it still feels like too much goddamn stuff.  On the other hand, I packed one bin (yarn, special-occasion clothes, books I've just read) and two teensy boxen-things, plus one bag for Goodwill/sale, plus three bags of trash/recycling, so go me!  I may be a little excited.  (I may carry the floor plans in my pocket.)

Oh gosh, when is trash day at the new place?  *beam*  Also, must print this page for putting on the side of the fridge.

I can never find food that is actually filling, for work.  This is unreasonably annoying.  I keep expecting to only have to eat once a day during the week and twice a day on weekends, and being all pissy when this naturally doesn't bear out.  "I just ate!  Waddayamean I gotta do it again?  I'm busy, and I just ate!"  Mneh.

Alas, I have a penchant for going through things immediately.  Hence why I can't have alcohol or snacks or things just hanging out in the house -- I will consume them all immediately.  "I'll just have a couple of Tootsie Rolls... *an hour later*  Why do I feel ill?"  This is why ING is win for me -- no chance of using it up Because It's There, because it really isn't.

I have a small stash of buttons, for [livejournal.com profile] bbbsg, for some reason.  I still have 242 lei, which is approximately 73 USD.  The banks around here just straight don't know what to do with it.  Would New York banks have a better time of this, do you think?  If so, maybe I'll just send it to [personal profile] rosefox, for paying my share of the phone bill this and next month.

...that's not a bad idea at all.

OH yes so I applied to jobs!  Woo!  One is exactly perfect, except for it's part-time at a start-up.  But, if it is sufficiently awesome... *shrugs*  I might put my ray-zoom into some direct-to-hire places, even though it's a pain, just to be thorough.

Also-things: shower curtain, flashlight and extra batteries, leave one of my unscented candles and some matches in the junk drawer.  What there needs to be is a bathroom junk drawer and also a my-stuff junk drawer.  I'm sure there are bins for this in the world.  And a proper laundry hamper!  I definitely want to get a desk soon, too.

I need, need, to budget hard for this month.  New-rent, deposit, prorated rent for current place, brain drugs, bus pass, phone bill, groceries.  Plus, I need to call two places and cancel my accounts.

On a scale of one to weird, how weird is it that I already know how Josh's and my fight about cleaning will go, and that it'll probably happen in the first quarter?  I worry that he'll see my not getting on his case about his place as my accepting his clutter-style, when really, it's about not getting on his case about his goddamn place, hello.  And I really don't want charts or schedules or anything, but I also don't want both of us getting lazy, or resentful...

I think too much.

I remain frustrated.  Full of frust.

Maybe I can just buy the parts every so often.  Left hinge, right hinge, hinge/power cover (maybe), letter HAlso.

It couldn't possibly be any worse/more annoying than it is right now.

Of course, given that the battery only batterises for like 20 minutes, which is likely due to fan issues, perhaps it's worth just getting a new-to-me laptop.  Maybe the next time I threaten to sell everything I own, I could think ahead, and buy the laptop before anything else.

In miscellaneous other news, I was going to order two pairs of the jeans I already own online, since mine have holes in them in awkward places, but the internet at home hates me and all life.  So instead, I went to Ross yesterday, and picked up two pairs of jeans for exactly half of what it would have cost me to buy these jeans online.

So, thanks, shitty home internet.

*annoyed*  First thing in the morning, sans clothes so I don't even have that excuse, and I weigh #136.  Today's exercise in self-control - never ever stepping on that scale again.  I don't need the aggravation.

In other news, I got a bed!  Mattress only, because eh.  Double.  It'll be delivered to me on the morrow.  Fantastic!

I feel like I'm not much past a little kid when I congratulate myself on basic-ass shit, when meanwhile I know people who are doing advanced-level stuff.  Buuut, eh, I went out and bought a bed, so whatever.
