I lost my Shuffle ages ago, but never got around to caring about it. Buuut, I'll be in New York next month, and an 8- to 10-hour flight == music is entirely required. (Picking songs has been fun, because I get to categorise them while I'm there.) Therefore, shopping.
Criteria:
* Basic music-playing functionality -- play, pause, skip, stop (or "the power button, durr"), volume.
* 4GB is ridiculous, 2GB is great, 1GB is doable.
* Ideally, it will charge via USB, because it will be a glorified thumb drive. Failing that, please let it use a headphones jack to USB cable (spare Shuffle parts) or a mini-USB cable (spare phone parts). I don't want to have to buy yet more shit.
* It should work with Linux. I had, at the time, Ubuntu 9.10 and a third-gen Shuffle. They did not love each other. I do not want this again.
I basically want a glorified USB drive that works with Linux hello. I cannot stress this enough -- I do have a laptop that runs Windows, but all of my music is on a hard drive in my desktop. There are fifteen different convoluted ways of making this work, or of getting some Windows-focused device, and making that work... or I can get something that Works With Linux perhaps I have mentioned this.
(For example, this just straight-up immediately annoys me.)
And to whoever makes these things, please let it work with Rhythmbox.

Naturally, I started here. Of these, iriver didn't annoy me, and fits the criteria above. The Sansa Clip looks good, too, and is slightly cheaper, buuuttt.
Goddammit, I want one thing to work how I want it to work out of the goddamn box. I want a music player that can connect to my music!!
