How do you keep track of your thoughts and notes for various projects?

I'm mid-check-deposit, and am thinking of ways to improve the invoices db, but I don't want to do it right away, because yknow, deposit.

I've tried all manner of things, but they all boil down to the same problem: requiring an object that needs to be constantly on my person, whether I'm out and about or at home. This never happens, so whatever I try eventually gets left by the wayside.

That said, here's what I've tried: mini-postit notes (the postit function letting me easily get rid of or store a note in the most appropriate place); an electronic PDA; a "PDA" made of index cards held together with a rubber band or a small clip; a .txt file on my desktop that's pretty much always open; and varying sizes and shapes of notebooks (Moleskins are my favorite, but I got a really cheap notebook with a built-in pen holder at Staples which is also spiffy - it fits in my coat pocket). I have not tried a small recording device because it's so strange hearing myself played back from one of those, but you might not have that problem.

I email myself from my phone. When I get back to my computer, I put things into my calendar or mark them to stay in my inbox or occasionally use remember the milk, that sort of thing.

I keep a 4 notebook system. One datebook for appts, one much smaller notebook for health related stuff and notes (because I have a lot of it), one index card spiral bound notebook for to-do lists, and one journal for anything else plus writing when I'm not at a computer. All of these fit into my purse, so it's not quite as crazy as it sounds.
