Hooo, RaceFail '09.  I haven't said anything because I have been reading and reading and omg reading and ps reading.  If you want to (try to) catch up, see [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong's tag gcadod.  They've been collecting links like mad.  If someone has a good summary link, feel free to lemme know.

I have the cheap analogy in my head of racism issues to sexism issues.  So I think, in a similar situation involving misogynistic stuff, what would I want men to contribute?  Once I get past being twitchy about men writing on such things at all, I would want them to at least state that they don't tolerate such shenanigans around them, and that they're working on any crap they still have in their head.

(That last is absolutely an assumption that they still have crap in their head, because thanks be to society, most all of us do.  It's hardly gender-specific.)

So.

1) This journal, and any like thing I'm on, is not a space for -ism crap.  Racism, sexism, able-ism which I don't think is a word yet but whatever, and so forth.  This is not the place for it.  If I see it, I will call it out, if I am able.

2) This includes any crap that comes from my own mouth, seeing as how I am hardly perfect.  If you see me speaking such things, please call me on it.

Yup, able-ism is a word within the disability community and screw the dictionaries which don't carry it. Yet.

I am not part of the (current) RaceFail fuss as I've done my time, but my flister Madam Silvertip is spending some space on her LJ reflecting on it from a personal ethical perspective in five posts dated March 8.

In case you're looking for more. I don't deal with this issue in this type of discussion, which I generally find less profitable than your own approach in #1 above.
