I have three major reasons why I don't switch to Linux.

1) My Windows machines work, for versions of "work".  I don't have a Windows install disc for the laptop, so if something goes afuckered, I can't easily fix that.  And all my music is on my desktop!  *afeard*

I note that it's likely dirt-easy to fix things.  I furtherly note that I am an anxbot the end.

2) I use VB like a madperson.  I have compatibility concerns for everything (IE, my Shuffle, &c), but VB and I go way back.  I can't give that up.  I can barely handle all the keyboard shortcuts being different in OpenOffice, for heaven's sake.

Buuut if OOo has VBA support now... hm.

3) I forget.  I think it had something to do with how everything involves knowing arcane command-line things and aiee.  However, apparently Ubuntu got wicked easy when I wasn't paying attention.  (I can install things easily, and install IE6, and use the Start key, and Ctrl-K gets to the search box, and eee.)

So clearly, the only thing for me to do is acquire a box and install Ubuntu on it, or set up one or the other as a dual-boot things, or suck it up and convert my (poor slow lumbering) desktop to Ubuntu.

Hmmmm.

For music and other files you are afraid of losing, I suggest DropBox (http://www.getdropbox.com) or Jungle Disk (http://www.jungledisk.com).

I have the 10g hard drive that came with the computer, and a 130g hard drive that has my music on it.  I could probably put all my files from drive 1 to drive 2, no worries.

Question: is there an easy way of converting a hard drive from Windows to Linux without it getting fuckered?  Or should I really suck it up and back things up elsewhere first?

If you are planning on doing a complete install of Linux, and using Wine to run windows programs inside of it, or VMWare to run an windows install inside of it, then you will be reformatting the hard drive entirely. That means everything will be lost -- so yes back up for sure.

If you are going to do the dual partition thing, you may not lose everything but I am not really sure -- I haven't done that before. I wouldn't count on it. Back up things anyway.

(I would back urgent things up anyhow, I hasten to note.)

'sudo aptitude install' is the slightly newer variant of that command. Supposedly cleaner uninstalls but I've never noticed.

hmm, Isn't there an Ubuntu live CD or live DVD? That would let you drop the disk in the drive, reboot, and play around without risking screwing anything up.

Yep (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto)!  Good idea, I had forgotten that option.

Yeah. This and more. My personal experience is that virtually every "benefit" of Linux is either overhyped or wrong. My Linux boxen are always unstable, their app set never universally works, and I can't get everything I need in Linux.

I run it on VMWare machines when I need it for a dev environment. Otherwise, I don't touch it.

Basically. I got Linux for my eeePC because I was tempted by how fast it ran, and really, all I wanted it for was as a portable typewriter and net browser. I know I'd be better served by switching to Ubuntu Remix or something, giving up easy access to the eee's easy mode stuff is more daunting now than ever. Especially after hours of fighting outside the easy mode. I've never seen so many errors in my life.
