Those "morning alertness" ideas definitely wouldn't have much effect on me, although I have been coffee-free for the past few days. I get exercise in the morning as a necessity rather than a choice, and I can definitely say it doesn't affect my mental alertness one way or the other. Asking me to write or code in the morning, too, is a grand way to see me at my worst.

As for the metabolism article, I simply don't believe it. I have a real problem with articles that use terms like "starvation mode" and "kick start". If someone can't take the time to actually explain the mechanisms of these processes, I assume they're repeating platitudes. This is even more the case after having read a book on training for cyclists which takes the exact opposite point of view-- metabolism cannot be "pushed" by eating food...metabolism is performed in your cells, most importantly being your muscles. It is demand-driven, not supply-driven. I also seriously question anyone who tells you that exercise above the anaerobic threshold is the best way to burn fat. Train above the anaerobic threshold and all you train is your anaerobic metabolic pathways, which preferentially use sugar over fat.
