I just watched the first episode of The Walking Dead, and auauaugh it was (a) amazing and (b) not what to watch when sick + insomniatic + on NyQuil.
1) The opening shot with the little girl was brilliant, in my mind, because I was expecting what I've come to expect from zombie flicks, and ho shit was that ever not it.
2) On the opposite end, I don't know why they bothered with the cut from the mom + son, Laurie having just passionately made out with Rick's best friend, to Rick looking at a photo of his family, who's him, Laurie, and Carl. I don't know why they wasted their time. If the male protagonist's best friend and wife are both alive somewhere in some post-apoc scenario, of course they'll be together. They're always together. It's to "drive home to spirit of loss" -- he's lost his job, his friends, his entire fucking town, his belief that the dead stay dead, and he knows that his wife and son are gone. So of course wife+best friend.
I am vastly, entirely, completely annoyed by this trope. ...goddammit, and now I'm gonna have to venture into the sucking vortex to get the trope name.
