*is dead*

I may just say fuck it and go to FG again and get a network card that works out of the box.  And yet, I am convinced that this should work.

Nrr.

Okay, I'll just tinker a bit now, whilst the cable's plugged in, and then to bed.

[eta] And when I create a new user, and I can't arrow-up...

Man, fuck this, I'm going to bed.

linux on hardware..

seems Ubuntu doesn't like you :/
then again, it hasn't usually ever liked me, so I can understand your frustrations
have you given thought to trying an rpm based distro? as stupid as it sounds Mandriva *might* have the driver issue figured out and working straight from install, they tend to do the bleeding edge driver support thing

Can't arrow up? Try System > Preferences > Keyboard and choose a different layout (104 key pc?). Also try adding evdev to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.

My bad, I wasn't clear as to the actual issue.

In Terminal, when I arrow up, I get ^[[A.  It doesn't seem to have created this account well - I may delete it, read up on it, and try again.

That's very weird -- especially for Ubuntu.

When I'm creating an account, I usually use from the command-line useradd fleem where fleem is the username.

Also, does the non-NDISWrapper version not work?

Yes, this would be my suggestion. I hate to say it, but when in doubt use the Windows driver ;)

Although now that I look it seems that Ubuntu hates this card period:

Hmmmm (http://www.google.com/search?q=ndiswrapper+ubuntu+DWL-520&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a).
