King crabs are cranky fuckers. When I lived in Alaska one of the fish shops in town got a shipment of live ones in and shortsightedly put them in one of the open top tanks. Well, they're not only cranky, they're incredibly smart, and they'd crawled out of that tank, into all the other tanks, eaten everything available to eat, and then took off exploring the shop. The girl who was working that morning opened to door to 50 or so very large crabs wandering around the shop.

I am not bothered by any of those pictures nearly as much as I am bothered by the one of the crab on the trashcan. I have no idea why.

Though, having grown up in a fishing village with a brisk lobster trade, I can't help but start salivating when I see a large crustacean. Yes, it's an OMFG giant bug, but it's a OMFG giant bug which would probably go just beautifully with drawn butter, a baked potato, and a nice chardonnay. So one part of my brain is yelling to run, and the other part of my brain is trying to remember whom I know with a big enough pot...

This post makes me very happy. Seriously, what's not to love about crabs? I've kept hermit crabs both when I was a kid and as an adult, and I just adore the little guys. If H.R. Giger made muppets they'd be hermit crabs. I've also had a fascination with coconut crabs since I was 9 or so. I haven't yet had the chance to see one in person though.

And on the other hand, crabs (and pretty much all crustaceans) are delicious!
