On the other hand, I don't want to lay claim to real disability stuff.

On one hand, though, I want to state outright, to anyone I talk to, that I am hard of hearing.  That way, maybe they'll speak up, or talk to me rather than facing away from me, so I have a chance in hell of hearing them.

(I don't read lips, but it is so easier to get the gist of something if I can get as many inputs as possible.)

I mean, technically, I am hard of hearing.  If you're facing away from me and blurring all your phonemes into one giant conversational clusterfuck, then it is hard for me to hear you.

Hey, when the time comes, don't be shy about stepping up to the disability bar just cuz you're not profoundly deaf.

Hearing loss counts. It fouls up your day in a lot of ways, even if it isn't severe.

I have lived with two dear friends as they lost their hearing, and got to see upfront how infuriating it was, to have an invisible disability that non-dis people would repeatedly forget about, and fail to accomodate. Grrr.
