Date: 2008-03-07 06:10 pm (UTC)About meal plans: actual weekly plans annoy me, I may not feel like cooking or eating Speghetti and Meatballs on Tuesday, you know? And so if I don't keep to one, I feel like I've failed or something.
So what I do is rifle through my cookbooks and recipe book about once a month (we shop about once a month) and write down a bunch of recipes what that sound good, with what book they're in and what page they're on, and as I write them down I make a grocery list, including quantities so I'll know what things I need to buy that aren't my "regular" items.
Then I put the list of recipes on the fridge and I can look at the list and pick out what I feel like cooking/eating that night.
I think this gives me some flexibility that an actual Meal Plan does not while also having that efficiency thing going for it.

Date: 2008-03-07 07:58 pm (UTC)I have a homemade heating pad that is a man's tube sock filled about2/3 with rice and tied near the top. It's wonderful. Microwave or oven it, and it stays warm for a very long time.
