I dunno, I'm in hearts with k.d. lang's version.

Of course, it's also been ages and ages since I've heard Cohen's version; I may have to check it again.

Yeah, I'm all about the k.d. I have a live version she did on NPR which I slightly prefer, too.

There's a pretty comprehensive collection here (http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/2006/05/hallelujah.html).

Damn. I knew this song was over covered but this is ridiculous.

I'm a stickler for covers. If your cover isn't fairly different from the original in style then you had damned well better do a better job with the treatment than the original. Personally I only go for covers that really change up the feel of the song being covered like Hendrix doing "All Along the Watchtower" or "Hey Joe", or Joe Cocker covering the Beatles or Randy Newman.

Though I pretty much give a pass for live performances. As a one off any cover can be pretty good.

Oh maaan.  In my queue of CDs to send out, I should send you copies of B's All Covers All The Time CDs.  They include (but are so not limited to) "Iron Man" by The Cardigans and "Too Drunk To Fuck" by Nouvelle Vague.

you posted those a while back I think. They were fantastic. Particularly "Too Drunk To Fuck" thats pretty much exactly what I like in a cover.

I'd love to hear more like that though.

I'm OK with unmodified covers if the new performer executes better. Otherwise I agree.

Sometimes I like a straight up cover if its just done better or even just with a different feel. This is common with blues covers, you cant change them up that much in structure but phrasing and vocalization become really important.

If I may...

You might like this fairly-different-from-the-originals collection of my own covers (http://www.marcet.net/Music/), then. :)

Such as my slow, acoustic rendition of White Stripes' "Fell In Love With A Girl".
