I think I just need to not listen to music if I'm not at home, in my room, with the door shut.  I always get massively irritated when I'm interrupted in listening to my music - and I live in a world of extroverts and the phone and argle and bargle.

This came about when I realised that I'm a lot less irritated when I am not listening to music on the bus, as there is no safe-for-me level that also drowns the talkers out.  And that most of my irritation at work at the phone is being interrupted, yes, but a lot of that is being interrupted mid-song.

Sad cat is sad.  I like music.  But if I can't detach from it in the Buddhist sense, then I shan't be allowed to have any.

Do you know of canalphones? They're basically earplugs as well, and you don't have to have your music loud at all for it to block out other people. (In fact, for most music, I have my iPod volume control at minimum, because it takes seriously tiny amounts of sound for hearing something that's actually plugged into your ear canal blocking out all sound.)

Usual range of prices for audio equipment is generally available, and if you can get used to having something jammed in your ear (it took me a couple of days, I confess) they're really awesome.

You can get them much cheaper than the first page on that link pulls up - mine, which I like a lot, cost about AU$60. (US$45ish?)

Fair warning: The first couple of days of wearing them a lot (bearing in mind that I was wearing them while sleeping, as well as during some of the day), I found my left ear, especially, hurt a bit, but once my ear basically got used to having something jammed in it, and adjusted, it stopped hurting altogether.

And they don't block ALL sound, but the difference is nonetheless substantial.

So, you're welcome for the recommendation - I wouldn't want to live without mine, now, because, yes, taking the bus is noisy and annoying, and my canalphones are soothing. Even if I don't feel like listening to anything at all I sometimes leave them in my ears, just because they reduce the sheer volume of the world around me.

For me it's not about music quite as much as needing something to occupy my attention somewhat and reduce the degree to which I get distracted by random and unpredictable sounds.
