Oh boy.  Do you want to know what creepy is?  Creepy is the Cup & Up:

"What we've done is build a silicon bra, insert it into the body and attach it to the ribs and to the fascia. It's like a normal external bra," [the MIM CEO Adi Cohen] continues, "where a strip lies on the shoulder and attaches around the body. We attach it to the ribs instead of to the shoulder, and to the fascia in the lower part of the body."

This is the DEFINITION of creepy, today.

Breast size changes, a lot.  Mine change in size just based on having my period (sometimes – not v. predictable).  Weight gain/loss changes breast size.  Working out really changes breast size.  Pregnancy is on a scale between "doesn't change your breasts at all" and "call in Frank Lloyd Wright".  How do they plan to compensate for that?  They also mention that teens are looking into this… have they accounted for that?  How much does this change?  How long does it last?

And now, some choice quotes.

"Newton is around, and gravity is working, and everything is falling again – what we call ptosis."

Ah, good ol' "let's make it a syndrome" disease.  "No no, it's not gravity, it's ptosis!  You have ptosis of the breasts!  Don't you want to fix that?"

Not to mention the fun pert – sorry, part – where 'ptosis' means "abnormal lowering or drooping of an organ or a part".  Which means, naturally, that gravity is abnormal, and that breast droopage due to gravity is abnormal.  Lovely.

"The most prevalent procedure in the world is breast implantation. Who is the crazy woman who agreed to be the first woman to put silicon into her body? Very strange things happen within the cosmetic world and the MIM is not as crazy as it sounds; that's the end point of what I'm saying."

"It's not as bad as breast implants… so that means it's good!  Amirite?  Just like kicking you in the face?  Totally not as bad as shooting you in the hip.  Brilliant we are!"

"All the women said, 'I want to be the first one!' It was like a fire in the fields! Everyone was very enthusiastic about the idea," he said. "The aesthetic market is growing rapidly; most women are willing to try things out – it's becoming like a trend."

This is perhaps one of the more depressing things I've read this… month, I think.  (I don't get out much.)

What's weirder to me is the number of feminist women I've seen around who are all for it… totally for themselves, not due to any outside factors, oh no.  Leaving aside the whole "As though I even know what's in their heads" thing, and leaving aside the whole "As though your choices were totally formed in a vacuum, entirely apart from the patriarchy, naturally" thing, what the hell ever happened to buying a well-fitting bra?  In what universe does getting breast surgery make more sense than shopping longer than normal?  I can understand being annoyed at having to wear a bra, but I mean, I'm not going to get shoes stapled to my feet because I'm tired of having to put on shoes.

Maybe more later, once I'm done being vaguely nauseated by the entire thing.

Although, I will list a couple of disclaimers, just to be thorough:

- I'm not saying these women (the feminists who are intrigued/enthused by this operation) are bad feminists, or that I am the arbiter of feminism, or whatever like that.  It's less "You're a bad feminist!" and more "I could not have expected that reaction if you'd paid me to expect that reaction".

- I'm not going to suddenly stop being friends/-ly with someone if they get this, or some lame thing like that.  People's choices are their own, and srsly, it's not like I am a shining example of feminism or anything.  I'll disapprove with their choices but not let it affect my actions, same as they would with my choice to, I dunno, wear skirts, or paint my nails, or run Windows.  Adulthood, you know.

- Ow.
