nonethefewer: (advice)

I may buy a computer.  One of the cheaper ones, naturally; they are all better than the machine I currently have.  (Which has a hiccoughing motherboard, a busted fan, and 256MB of memory.)

I'll hold off until my next paycheck.  I have bills and things; those come first.  Plus [livejournal.com profile] jeremiahsb mentioned he'll be dropping off computer parts, so maybe I can cobble something together instead.

My notes.  Public so's anyone can chime in.

* My wireless card is D-Link DWL-520, and it says rev. E.  If that means E1, then I am scrood, else I am fine.  Minorly scrood.  More like inconvenienced.  I'm not that worried, although a thousand thanks to the clerk-person at FreeGeek, who brought that pesky internets thing to my attention.

* I have an older Phillips camera.  It uses a, and this is my not-a-hardware-person thing raising its head, 9-pin cable thing.  If I am getting a new-to-me computer, then I can still use my current desktop for pictures transference.  I'd rather get it working in Linux, though, if I can.

* Everything else I do is fairly typical.  Word processing, email, the internets, listening to music.  I do some db work (I can use MySQL), and I do some web page foo (I can learn PHP).  I will miss keyboard shortcuts in Excel, but either I can make OpenOffice do my &%*$ bidding or I can try to install Excel on Linux using Wine.  I suppose it depends on how batshit insane I'm feeling that day.

* Hey, I could get a printer!  I completely forgot about this whole printer-owning thing.  I would primarily use it for directions, knitting patterns, and resumes.  Nothing special.

Why am I doing this?

...why not?
