Why is it this difficult to get Word to stop inserting smart quotes?

Why is there both AutoFormat and AutoFormat As You Type?

Why?

(Please take note that I know how to disable them, and likely the answer is "Because Microsoft is full of douchebags", as usual.)

So you can AutoMangle your own documents, then when you receive an unMangled document from a smrt person, you can AutoMangle it with a single click.

the most annoying thing is if you copy/paste from word to a text file, it preserves the smart quotes! i keep meaning to sit and write a program to de-wordify textfiles once and for all, but it's tedious and i'm lazy :)
